Koh Samui Area

[vc_separator style=”shadow” border_width=”3″ el_width=”80″]Samui! Thailands third largest tropical island sits around 60km away from the mainland country in the Gulf, South East Asia. Koh Samui is around 21km long by 25km wide and is covered by tropical rainforest, coconut plantations and sandy beaches. The island was discovered in 1970 by backpackers looking for their next luxury resort. Although Koh Samui has been developed, with plenty of luxury beach villa rentals, it still holds its reputation in it beautiful scenery and its remote island feel. Some people believe that the word “samui” derives from the Malay word “saboey”, or “safe haven”, although there appears to be no credible corroboration of this.

Koh Samui nightlife is famous for being some of the best in Thailand (if not the entire world). The phrase “full moon party” is now the accepted description of a party under the light of the moon (in Thailand). The wealth of Koh Samui’s tourists have changed this once completely local island into fountain of luxury discos, clubs, bars and nightlife. Cheap whiskey, cocktails and beer ensure the visitors return year after year. Our favorites were a tough decision, but they have to include Ark bar, Coco Tams and Nikki Beach Samui.

Samui is only limited by your knowledge of culinary tastes, as they are all catered for on this tasteful island. French, Scandinavian, English, American, Japanese, Indian, German, Mexican and Italian restaurants are some of the choices as well as plenty of true local Thai restaurants, offering the delicious and (sometimes) spicy food that Thailand is world famous for. Some of our favorites include Tree Tops Sky Dining & Bar and The Boudoir So whether you want a wholesome pie and chips or a lip tingling green curry you won’t be disappointed!

Shopping in Koh Samui will be in the form of cheap luxury. Every part of the island has a small unique shop that is worth taking the time to look around however the main shopping areas are in Chaweng, Lamai and Nathon and the large shopping complexes are a great place to start. Clothes shops, general markets, food markets, night markets, music shops, hand-made local items can also be found in these areas plus more. Stick to the department stores if you’re wanting to buy the genuine products as you will be guaranteed to be sold a fake from the market.

The luxury resort to Koh Samui has way more to offer. Ang Thong National Marine Park is an untouched paradise of 42 islands in the Gulf of Thailand with limestone mountains, jungle land, white-sand beaches, waterfalls and hidden coves ready to be explored. There’s also the Big Budda, The Fisherman’s Villages, Temples, The Budda Garden, The Mommy Monk, Various Tours of the island, snorkelling and so much more.
We’re not a big fan of the Cabaret shows, so you won’t find much advice on them here. Check out our next section for information on the various beaches around Koh Samui as your luxury rental may be located on one.

How To Get There

[vc_separator style=”shadow” border_width=”3″ el_width=”80″]Getting from your Koh Samui luxury villa rental to anywhere on the island will be swift and easy. Due to the islands small size and good road network anywhere in Samui can usually be reached within 30 mins. Some of the usually Thailand transport options are not seen in Koh Samui like the tuk tuk or a formal bus service. Instead, Koh Samui has a fleet of private vans with open back bench style seats that circle the island. Simply stand on any road and within a few minutes you will be picked up at the side of the road by hand instruction. If catching a Samui bus isn’t you style there are plenty of taxis, other private transfer company and the option to rent a car or motor bike.
